"The Realities of Internet Marketing"

by Frank J. Sherosky
Author of "Perfecting Corporate Character"

It's true that you don't have to have a website to start a business, but you certainly have to have a web presence to grow it!

However, when it comes to the personal and financial costs of building and expanding an ON-line business, there are few places to go that will spell it out for you. This overview article is based on my research of internet marketing.

Even if you start a home-based internet business, there are personal and financial costs involved, despite all of the hype and rhetoric of internet marketers. You may have no employees, because you can perform by yourself in a fraction of the time what would have taken a small team, but the impact on your life with respect to time and initial start-up investment should never be underestimated.

The Internet is NOT a smooth road to guaranteed and immediate wealth. It's literally an unruly arena, like the stock market, especially when it comes to managing and harnessing its power. Remember why it was created in the first place: an information-sharing tool for the military that could not easily be destroyed due to its MANY points of access. Those many access point make it an enigma by design! (For more on net history, see my e-book when available)

Question: Do the same rules of good business that apply OFF-line STILL apply with equal validity to the ON-line world, just with a different tool that requires different strategies? They certainly do!

Unfortunately, many well-meaning people are deceived into believing the opposite; that they can build a site on the Net, hit "enter" once (or at the most TWICE!), and wake up the next day as dot-com millionaires. The adage that "there is no free lunch" goes out the window, as too many fail to understand the real nature of the tool that is at their disposal.

In real estate, it's location, location location. With net-marketing, it's TRAFFIC-TRAFFIC-TRAFFIC. Investment in certain forms of advertising is still required to generate that traffic.

Personally, I would compare the current state of the computer and internet industry to the early days of the wild American West. The frontiers have been traveled no less than the Louis and Clark expedition; the maps have have been distributed; the grub stakers are taking their positions, but the laws are still barbaric, few and far between; and NOBODY knows for sure where it will ultimately go!

So, let's Review the Realities of an ON-line business:
  1. Starting a cyber business takes PATIENCE with the business as well as with people, no less than a non-cyber one.

  2. Expect at least THREE to SIX months to develop a growing structure.

  3. Expect to spend TIME building your business, especially at startup.

  4. Expect to devote a minimum of ONE to TWO HOURS per day, EVERY day to business building.

  5. Expect rapid CHANGE and don't let it bother you, as it is merely a fact of life on the Internet

  6. Realize that it IT TAKES MONEY TO MAKE MONEY, meaning there's NO FREE LUNCH even with an internet business

  7. Be prepared for an ongoing financial commitment, especially at the start

  8. Devote your attention to programs that require an ONGOING FINANCIAL COMMITMENT of others, as it yields fastest results.

  9. FREE business offers are used merely to be lawful and as a hook, based on a give-to-get philosophy

  10. Giving USEFUL information for FREE pulls in what most browsing people want: something for nothing.

  11. The Big Guys of internet marketing don't want you to know that they prefer selling the shovels to the internet miners, over digging for the gold themselves.

  12. Concentrating on programs that generate TRAFFIC creates more avenues for leads that can be marketed than any other method, except outright purchasing of leads.

  13. Concentrating on multi-level programs provides depth to your income stream, even if it's just a simple affiliate program

  14. Being involved in MULTIPLE programs is a form of income DIVERISIFCATION

  15. Only programs that WORK and provide a genuine value are worth your time.

  16. It's you against the Cyber-world, and can be a lonely effort

  17. The internet was originally designed by the military NOT to be easily maneuvered.

If you're still interested in an internet business after this, I'd say you're up for the game!
